Cosmic Dance

As an artist, I was thrilled to collaborate with a client who shared my passion for exploring the intersection of art, spirituality, and mathematics. The client, who wanted to reconnect to his Indian roots, commissioned me to create a piece that would reflect his heritage and beliefs.

Description

The resulting masterpiece is a brass dodecahedron with intricate fractal cuttings on each of its faces, revealing smaller dodecahedrons that are rotated to create a mesmerizing visual effect. On each of the smaller pentagons, I hand-carved the sacred mantra Om Namah Shivaya in its original written language, a process that I repeated 108 times. This number is significant in many spiritual traditions and has a particular resonance in Hinduism, where it represents the number of earthly desires that one must overcome to reach enlightenment.

The dodecahedron is encased in a glass dodecahedron with brass borders, which is supported by two brass sticks connecting the two dodecahedra. The brass sticks ensure that the smaller dodecahedron does not move around within the larger one, while the glass casing adds a layer of transparency and luminosity to the piece.

The entire structure is surrounded by two massive copper snakes, each with two heads that split like a Y and wrap around the dodecahedron from top to bottom and bottom to top. The snakes' eyes are made of brass and stainless steel, respectively, and the way they encircle the dodecahedron from a certain angle creates the symbol of infinity (∞). The lamp is suspended from a brass chain, which adds to the sense of fluidity and movement.

This piece was a true labor of love, and the process of carving the mantra 108 times while listening to the client's music was a deeply meditative experience. The fact that the metal had to be cooled down by burying it in the earth added a layer of grounding and connection to the natural world that was essential to the final product. The geometry and materials used in this piece are symbolic of the interconnection between spirituality and mathematics, and I am proud to have created a work of art that reflects the beauty and complexity of these interwoven concepts.

This is a commissioned piece done in 2023, that now KAGE is allowed to reproduce if desired. Following is a list of variants in existance:
Sun Variant: Brass lamp with copper snakes (high gloss finishing): 1
Sun Variant: Brass lamp with copper snakes (matte finishing): 0
Moon Variant: Stainless Steel lamp with copper snakes (high gloss finishing): 0
Moon Variant: Stainless Steel lamp with copper snakes (matte gloss finishing): 0

Due to the complexity of this piece, after the order is placed, KAGE needs around 4-5 months to finish and deliver it.
